Warning about I.D. scams

Please read this if you are a letting agent with non-resident clients.

HMRC are writing to letting agents to tell you about a serious issue that has come to our attention.

Letting agents with non-resident clients are being targeted in a series of major I.D. scams.  These scams start with a letter or fax headed 'Non-Resident Landlord Scheme'. Some, but not all, have been signed by 'Marcauley Sanders'; this person is not an HMRC employee. Others contain no signature.

The letter or fax will tell an agent to update the form NRL1 and to send completed copies back to them. They will then ask for a considerable amount of personal details that could be used for identity theft.

The letting industry is aware of these scams and has issued warnings on their websites, so it is possible you have already seen articles about this. Given the serious implications of these scams, we are writing to all our customers as an added precaution to make sure that as many know about this as possible.
